Rita Pankhurst, the 2016 Bikila Award Lifetime Achievement Award winner and a true friend of Ethiopia passed away at the age of 92 and was working on another publication on the history of Ethiopia. Rita’s passing is an enormous loss to all Ethiopians and Friends of Ethiopia internationally.

January 4, 2018 -- Professor TSEGA, Edemariam passed away on January 1, 2018, at home, in his 80th year. Born and raised in Gondar, Ethiopia, he was educated at Addis Ababa, McGill and Lund Universities, and the London School of Tropical Medicine.

February 2017 -- Dr. Richard Pankhurst – the 2016 Bikila Award Lifetime Achievement Award winner and a true friend of Ethiopia passed away on February 16, 2017 at the age 89. We express our deep sympathy to the Pankhurst family and may God rest his soul in peace. Amen!
Toronto, January 12, 2017 -- Tens of thousands of ancient Ethiopian manuscripts – maybe more – have collected dust for over a century because they are written in what is now a rarely studied language, Ge’ez.
But a new course at the University of Toronto is teaching a new generation of students to understand the ancient Semitic language so that one day they can access this long-lost trove of knowledge.

The Bikila Barefoot Challenge is a fundraising initiative in support of the establishment of an Ethiopic Studies program at the University of Toronto and to remember the legacy of our marathon hero Abebe Bikila.
